I ordered this (new) book as it was promoted as having something for pro photographers, which unfortunately didn’t prove to be the case. Within the first few pages one learns that the cover was an accidental image which for me raised the question–what happened to the shot list. The author also favors AWB. Oh, one of those people who subscribe to the “I’ll fix it in post” paradigm. I never got more than a half way through the book as it neither confirmed or enhanced my knowledge. Some of the example poses were downright terrible. The book certainly isn’t for pros and in my opinion will to some degree waste time for any aspiring photographer.

I have photographed with Allison and I know that she has a photographic great eye. Most people who see her work know that she has this skill, but what I appreciate even more is her ability to educate (with images to back up each lighting technique). Even though I consider myself an experienced photographer, I am excited to hone my skills with studio lighting using this book as my bible. My favorite part of the book is the mannequin head shots showing different lighting styles in action. Great stuff!!

I recently got my hands Allison Earnest’s new book Light Modifiers.

I have been a professional photographer since the 90′s, with a primary focus on Wedding’s.

The photography world is ever changing, and now we are in the digital world.

I like what Allison said, and I find it to be so true “It is very common to find yourself shooting a wedding using exactly the same equipment as the guests attending the wedding.” I often find my self shooting with people who have the latest and greatest camera with all the bells and whistles, but as Allison puts it, “we make photographs, not take them.” That is so true.

As a photographer, I find my self shooting in a similar fashion, doing what feels is comfortable. What I really liked about this book is how she illustrates how adding or removing a certain light changes the feel of the photograph. The doll that was used to show off the lighting was very cool to see because it was stationary but had human curves to give a sample of how light works.

Another aspect of the book I liked, is she introduced types of flashes and modifiers out there these days, and how it looked on the subject.

This book brought me back to the basics again, and then introduced me into new ways “Sculpt with Light.”

After all we make our portraits, as photographers.

Looking forward to the next book!

    Michael Johnson – Wedding Photographer.

I received my copy about a week ago and find this book so useful for ANY type of photographer! Allison did a phenomenal job with demonstrating various techniques – and shows STEP BY STEP process with tips along the way! Her images were outstanding and the models are PERFECT for exactly what she is portraying! Photographers should definitely purchase this book and professors should use this nationwide as a part of their courses!

I have really enjoyed going thru this book. The diagrams that accompany the illustrations are really good and up to date. Seeing the latest modifiers and how they are used using people and the famous model head manoqine. The book could be used as a text book, a small group could go chapter by chapter and try the lessons to see how they work. For example the chapter on using the simple attachable light modifiers. Are working with a reflector outdoors. One of the key elements of this book that many new people need to understand and this book does a very good job is

EXPLAINING HOW WE SEE LIGHT AND COLOR. far to many people do not understand this and understanding this will make their photography so much better. Buy this book and give to a true friend who maybe struggling.
